Can't play AVI

I just found out that I can't play a AVI video on my iMac, is this a windows only file, that Mac does not support?

While there are plug-ins that make some AVI's playable in QT, I much prefer VLC. You can get it at http://www.versiontracker.com.
Also look for flip4mac to play wmv files in QT directly.

Have you checked the file properties to see what the file has been encoded using?
Also more importantly do you have perian installed?

I would recommend right clicking that and downloading it, then watching it with VLC player. If that doesn't work, then go to divx.com and download the Quicktime plugin for avi files.

I am on a Windows XP machine and can't get that video link to play in either IE or Firefox. I just get a Quicktime logo with a "?".

Quick Look

A surprising thing is that .avi files can and will be opened with "quick look" but not quicktime. How wild. I recently discovered this. Not sure if ya'll known this all along tho. x Tommy

im on a Windose XP machine right now, and i can open it with VLC. It is a little weird seeing as i play it one time and it opens up in 5 different windows....but its definatly not corrupt.

Perian is awesome. Definitely recommended.

Perian is a set of codecs for Quicktime to allow playback of avi's (and other formats) that utilize the more common codecs e.g. xvid, divx, etc

Defo one of the first apps you should install on a new mac is Perian.

I try to use Quicktime to play ALL my video content and then only use VLC to play full HD 1980 content as VLC can spit out 5.1 audio.

maybe you wanna try installing the klite codec pack...with that pack installed you can basically play any file you want.

as for the mac...up until now I haven't come across a file which I couldn't play with vlc, perian or flip4mac.
