Since upgrade to watchos10 I can't seem to find a way of playing podcasts that are on (downloaded to) the Apple Watch without it trying to play from the phone , which is often out of range of the watch when I go for a workout .
Seems to be no way of finding the podcasts that have been directly downloaded to the watch , sometime I can start a podcast whilst in range of the phone , which will continue to play whilst out of range, but if I try to change the podcast it doesn't work .

Anyone else have any similar experience ?

So far the only way I can force downloaded podcasts to play from my watch to my AirPods is to switch my iPhone off.
I have submitted feedback to Apple.
keen to know if I am doing something wrong , as I usually leave my iPhone behind when going for a run , or a workout , sometimes in the gym my phone is within connection range, but once I get out of range I’m stuck not been able to change podcast etc.

I have the same problem, most annoying!

It is clearly a bug; selecting playback on the watch (connected to bluetooth headphones), triggers playback on the iPhone podcast app / iPhone speaker. Duh.

Quick work-around that seems to work reliably is to force-kill the podcast apps on *both* the iPhone and watch, and then entering the podcast app on the watch. Now, downloaded podcasts will properly play from the watch (as per normal behaviour in WatchOS 9).

Any updates noticed in the latest Watch OS 10.1? Has the issue been fixed or new workarounds discovered?

I haven’t seen a difference. I can’t figure out how to force my Watch to play downloaded podcasts through the Watch rather than routing to iPhone then to AirPods.

About the only reliable way to make sure podcasts didn’t play through phone is to turn off the phone before I play podcast on watch. There’s something funny with AirPlay going on, it seems.

I’ve tried force quitting both Podcast app on phone and watch, then trying to play Podcast on watch. However, the watch always reactivates Podcast on phone and plays through the phone
