So I can't get the order on the web to work. Here's the error I'm getting:

AT&T was unable to set up your account online. To reserve your new iPhone, click the Continue button to find the nearest Apple Retail Store so we can help you in person. When you stop in, a Specialist will be ready to help you complete your account setup, personalize your new iPhone and get it ready to make calls, browse the web, receive email, and more.*

Yup, I'm having this exact same issue. I've been on the phone for the past 2 hours trying to get it resolved. I'm getting pretty angry, needless to say.

I've been following that thread, and while it helped me getting passed the texting issue, there's been no real answer for this issue. I'm going to order from the apple store because I have a gift card that I need to use to get this phone. I can't go through AT&T. Anyways, I called AT&T this morning, and they just sent me back to the apple sales people. And that's as far as I've gotten. No one will take me. I'm just getting really upset now.

I got my upgrade yesterday through the online apple store. It locked up a few times (probably server overload) but eventually I got it on order.

There was an option for new accounts as well.

I had the exact same problem as the original poster.

I currently have a iphone 2G and am eligible for upgrade.

I got around it by going to the AT&T site and going through the process of upgrading (i.e. new phone + 2 yr contract). When you get to the phone selection screen they have the iphone 3GS listed... just select and everything goes smoothly... they promise to FedEx it overnight first come first served.

Only downside is trusting AT&T... not exactly sure that's a great idea. Nonetheless it is ordered!

Same here. I also had to turn to AT&T to get my 3GS pre-ordered. I guess they take turns dropping the ball.
