Can't read external drive unless connected to time capsule?

Hi

I've had an external hard drive connected to my time capsule which I've been using for manually backing up working files.
If I plug it directly into my Mac it doesn't appear?
No problem using it thru the time capsule.
Have I formatting this (and the others) incorrectly?

Does it show up in Disk Utility when connected directly to your Mac?
What exact Mac with what Mac OS X version do you use and how is the HDD connected to your Mac via what interface?

Hi

Not sure whether it show's up in disk utility will have to check in the morning.

It's running on a 2011 mac mini running 10.7.5 and connected via usb2.
The external is self powered.
