Can't reliably receive email on my iPhone

Ok, when I first got the phone a few weeks ago it worked great with getting my Verizon and .Mac email. I don't use .Mac all that often because it is fairly new still, but my verizon account is hit and miss. I have tried deleting it off the phone and reinstalling but goes right back to the same deal. I might get a couple emails and then it will ask if I want to load 25 more emails. I click on the load button, it shows its working and the n stops with nothing happening. What's the deal? Is it a iPhone issue or AT&T issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
