I have just upgraded to 10.6.6 and App Store has installed itself on the Dock. I wish to remove it from the Dock as (a) I am unlikely to use it, and (b) I don't want a cluttered Dock.
However whenever I drag the icon off the dock and it disappears in the traditional cloud of smoke, the next time I start up the computer the icon is back on the dock.
How can I get rid of it permanently?
Thanks.

Right mouse and click options. Deselect start and login.

Hopefully that should sort you out.

Neither of those suggestions worked for me, it still shows up in my dock on restart (even after uninstalling the AppStore).

Ditto, have tried both methods and the App Store icon reappears on every new start up.

Apple is trying to make it a part of the os. It is like the stocks or weather icon on iOS. They wont let you move it from the dock or delete the app.

I seem to be able to trash the actual application. Shouldn't that solve the OP's issue?

Everything I have tried, upon a restart, the icon is back in the dock.

It is quite irritating to know that I can not permanently remove an icon from my dock, because Apple wants it there.

App Store does NOT add itself to dock.

Thus, it cannot "clutter" up the dock unless you add it or you have some third party utility that does it.

Weird issue. I removed mine from the dock with no issues... Along with removing almost everything I never use. My OS boot partition is 5.3 GB now. :)

After trashing the actual application, when you restart your computer you'll find a ? in the dock labeled "App Store".

For those people stating that it can't add itself to the dock, I really hope you are being sarcastic because so far there does not appear to be a way to keep the app store out of the dock - you can trash it and upon start up it is back in the dock.

I removed mine from the dock with no problems - right click - Options - Remove from dock.

Now if I want to see the App Store I just go to the Apple Icon on the upper left and it is their, just under Software Updates. So no need to clutter up the dock since it is now an option under the :apple: That's one of the new features of 10.6.6

Apparently everyone is not affected by the haunting dock icon.

I can't stand it taunting me after every reset, so I'm going to try a fresh instal and see if that helps.

Read the post just before yours. You can remove it quite simply.

Is there supposed to be a wink or something there? It added itself to my dock. Whether it's a clutter is open to interpretation, but it definitely added itself, without my intervention....

UPDATE: I can remove the App Store icon from the dock with the "remove from dock" option, and the one app I installed using the App Store also installed an icon on the dock. Actually, it was a cool looking animation when the icon from the installer just swooped over to the dock. Don't know if every app does this, but this one did....

the haunting, taunting, daunting Apple Store App. ... No Thanks

I am glad the simple removal has worked for others - it has not worked for me. I've even tried reinstalling and trying again (twice). I've tried it with the App Store still installed and I've trying uninstalling the App Store.

Obviously there are going to be a lot of people calling people like me either ignorant or a liar until more people come forward with the same problem. I guess I'll have to wait until someone is able to find the problem and solution.

It's OK. I believe. I know that just because I can remove it, does not mean that my experience is universal. I'm assuming that when you say you have reinstalled, you mean the App Store, not the whole OS.

Do you have any OS "add-ons" for the Dock. If you do, then that would be the place to start looking. I don't have any, and perhaps a quick poll of those who can and can not remove icon from the Dock, and whether they too have "add-ons" might show a pattern.

At least it's a place to start, eh?
