I ran mavericks for a few days and decided to do a clean install. Now my external drive won't mount and disk utilities can't repair it. ( I have a old macbook with snow leopard, which is stuck on repairing for at least an hour).
Anyone no of a way to get access my drive, so I can transfer my time machine backup to another external drive and restore from that?

You have to reformat the drive first, then launch the OS X install disk and from there you can restore from an old backup.
