When I enter time machine, I see all of my previous back ups, usig the slider at the far right i can scroll to an of my previous back ups, yet at the bottom right the restore button is greyed out...how do i restore if i want to?

Also what is the difference between time machine, and time capsule ?

This may be a useless response, but the restore button only becomes enabled when you go back in time and select a file in the Finder window that you want to restore.

I know, thats what im trying to do...but the button is still grey

I want to know how to do it, if i ver have a HD crash etc. I want to make sure i have everything correct. and ready to go...i back up everynight..but, i don't understand where am i restoring too.

It is greyed out because first you need to select something (a file or folder) to be restored.

"time machine" is the name of the software that comes with Mac OS X.

"time capsule" is the name of a hardware device that Apple sells. The device contains a disk that "Time machine" can use. (But time machine can use other external disk as well.)

Can't restore in time machine

Hi Cap41, did you ever get this resolved? I am having the exact same issue. I see the history dates on the RHS of the screen but they are blacked out and the restore button is always gray.

I opened time machine preferences, and then clicked options. My home folder was listed under 'do not back up' or something like that.

Restoring from TMCompletely after hd crash

Try dragging and dropping the items into another newer folder.
The only reason the restore button would not work is it just can't find the file.
