Hey there, after not using my Ipod for a long while i decided to try to get siri addon from cydia on it once i got to the point where you go into settings to download it from a website. Once i tried that it didn't work and then settings shows me nothing but the background. after numerous reboots I decided to try and restore the Ipod but then itunes told me that it couldn't connect to the itunes update server. My internet settings have been the same for a while and ive been able to update. I don't think this is the problem, but anybody who can help shine some light on whats going wrong and preventing me from restoring is welcome.

Please help asap.

You can't restore back to 5.0.1. Apple has stopped signing the iOS 5.0.1 so you can only restore to 5.1 in which you will loose your jailbreak.

Any Ideas if installing an Itunes alternative will solve the problem?

Dfu mode

Try getting to dfu mode (google it) and when you do, your itunes will prompt you that your ipod is in dfu mode. Restore from there.

even entering DFU mode itunes still gives me the message that it can't restore because the update servers are unavalible

already tried searching around but to no avail here is my last resort

hosts file?

not at the moment but i can get that

did you modify your etc hosts file so that itunes checks Saurik's server instead of iTunes for firmware signing?

if so, get rid of the entries in etc hosts so that itunes can phone home properly

To clarify, donlab means /etc/hosts. Etc is a hidden folder at the top level of a Mac hard drive. On Windows, the hosts file is in a different location but it's the same thing.
