Can't restore iPone 3G

So my iPhone decided to freeze on me after trying to set the alarm.

I let it run out of battery as it stayed frozen then turned it back on after charging it.

It seemed to work fine but it froze again after trying to set the alarm. So then I tried to restore it on iTunes but it keeps saying "restore was unsuccessful".

Now the iPhone is stuck in safe mode and the only way to get it out of safe mode is to restore it which I can't do.

I've had this phone for 2.5 years and don't want to be forced to by a new iPhone because my current £300 one can't set the alarm properly.

Any solutions?

Try restoring in DFU mode (see my sig). I'd setup the phone as new and not from a backup if you're successful with the restore.
