Can't see friend's phone in iChat

My friend uses Verizon for his cell and AOL as his ISP. He assigned his phone an AOL IM screen name and can log in somehow. He shows up in AOL buddy lists but I can't get him into iChat. I CAN, however, start a new chat, specify his "phone name" and chat with him.

I've tried a few variations of his phone's IM name in Address Book and iChat but nothing works.

Anyone know what I'm missing here?
