Upon start only guest account is visible. If I login with safe boot mode, I can see the hard drive and the user admin account is there and visible. However, all its folders are marked with a red minus sign, and I am not able to copy them to the ext. drive, as it ask for admin credentials and it will not accept them when entered. There is 1 folder created by the user in her user folder. Only this user created folder I was able to copy onto an external drive.
The user has no current backup and plenty of valuable files she needs. Sadly, the external hard drive has no time machine or bootable backup, just a collection of files from a year ago.
First indication of a problem was messages 'your startup disk is almost full. ' A busy person, the user ignored this message. Several days later she sees a message 'your startup disk is full'. Next, her mac mail was blank, and (deleted itself? she said) and then began to reinstall itself.
Now, her user folder is not available to access either at login screen or from Guest account>sys prefs> users and groups.
I tried to set up a target mode to my MacBook Pro 2011 or my 2013 MacBook Air but seem to not have the proper cables. Not sure what is needed...
1. How can I recover her user folder and its files?
2. recovery mode not available with restart>R
3. How to restore her to functionality?
Thanks for your help!
