Can't see which phone number replying to for SMS

Hi there, I need some help with my sms service.

Basically, I have a couple of contacts that have more than 1 mobile phone number - as they live abroad and have a UK mobile as well as a UK one.

I have just discovered that when I reply to their text there is no way of knowing what number I am replying to - one is a free text and one will cost me 30p!! I know when I create a new text I can specify but I can't see anywhere in the SMS 'thread' that states which number replying to.

Am I right in thinking that the sms 'thread' is per PERSON or PHONE NUMBER??
