Can't seem to remove AirPods from bluetooth menu

So I had AirPods previously but have since sold them. I want to remove them from the bluetooth list on my mac (El Cap) but when I hover over it in the preferences and click on the "X" it just tries to connect. There's no option to remove it. If I click on the "X" beside the wireless keyboard or trackpad I get the option to remove but not with the AirPods. Can anyone help please?
