Can't send email via WiFi on unlocked 3G, anyone know why?

I have a jailbroken 3g that is not currently on any carrier. While I am awaiting the unlock,I am relying on wifi to managey emails when out of the office. I know my account is setup correctly because I am always able to retrieve mail. I just can't send sometimes, even on the same network thAt I have previously had success on. Any ideas?
