Can't set VLC as default player

Tried searching for a topic with the same problem but couldn't find one. I have a lot of .avi files and I want the default player for them to be VLC. Searching online I found that by right clicking on one .avi file > open with > VLC and then checking the box that says "always open with" was supposed to do this. Problem is it only changes that specific file to be opened with VLC. If I open any other .avi it still opens with Quicktime. If I download a new .avi it still opens with Quicktime. Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong? Thanks.

Try doing Get Info on the files instead. Under Open With, select Change All.
