Can't share internet via Wi-Fi?

It appears I can't share my internet connection via Wi-Fi. I used the Sharing preferences pane to share an internet connection from a Huawei E220 USB modem. But, the hotspot didn't start and I didn't see the AirPort icon change and my iPad can't find the network.

How do I make it work? I've also disabled my firewall.
