cant shut down osx

not sure whats going on. I can't shut down or restart. Every time I try, all programs close and it looks as if it is about to(even top toolbar goes away) then it just hangs.. and i'm able to open programs again.

any ideas?

Hold down the power button and hard boot it.

was trying to avoid that.

control option command eject does not work either

Doing it once in awhile won't hurt it.

Just run the updates after it reboots.

how about issuing a "sudo shutdown" from terminal?
