Can't sign on

My friend gave me her macbook 13 inch (late 2008)
It turns on but once it prompts for password I enter it but it never logs on.
It just says on the sign in page.

Do you have the restore media of that MacBook or a Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD to perform an ERASE & INSTALL or CLEAN INSTALL?

Have you verified the password with your friend? Does the login window shake when pressing ENTER after having put in the password?
