Can't start my iphone. Weird start screen

I have an iPhone 3G. Recently after updating my phone, I have got a weird start screen (see pix attached) showing the apple with a wheel underneath. This screen remains indefinitely and I can never get access to my applications screen.
I have tried to reboot the phone but nothing changes.

Has some else experienced the same issue? How can I get it resolved?

What happens when you connect to your computer and iTunes?

Nothing happens. iTunes doesn't even recognize the phone.

Have you tried DFU mode? If you don't know how, there's instructions on google.
