Can't stop smiley emoticon substitution

In Mail and Safari at least, every time I type : and ) I get ☺. (a smiley face)

I've checked the Symbol and Text Substitution in the Language and Text System Preferences.

I've deleted this file:

~/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist

since that's where the Text Substitutions are per this post:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2208360?start=0&tstart=0

Also tried deleting:

com.apple.systempreferences.plist

Since it seemed like it was being modified when I changed the Substitutions.

No change. Also, this behavior is not apparent in a different user account.

Any ideas? Thanks.
