Cant sync contacts from iphone to new Mac

So my job gave me a macbook pro and I am trying to sync my iphone to it. I am trying to do it in a way that I don't loose any of the info on the phone. I already authorized the computer to transfer the apps to it but can't get the contacts to sync to it. The first time I tried it, it gave me a message asking me if I wanted to merge the info from my phone to the computer and I picked it, but it didn't do it. I can't get it to do it, am I doing something wrong. Also how do I get my music and my photos from the phone onto itunes to sync in the future, I don't have iPhoto on it yet. Any ideas????? Please help me, thanks in advance for all your help.
