Can't sync Contacts from MBP to iPad3

I am missing something here. I've read the user's guide, checked on line, etc., but no luck so far. I have it set to sync through iCloud, but....?

Do the MBP and the iPad have to have the exact same accounts in place? The iPad is in wife's Apple id, MBP is in mine. How do I get things to sync?

You answered your own question, need to be on the same ID.
