Cant sync Iphone 3G 16gb

I recently got a iphone 3g 16gb. It is in recovery mode. I am trying to restore but problem is, i cant connect to my PC. I am running windows xp sp3. everytime i connect is says 'usb device not recognized'. Any way i can fix this problem. I really wanna be able to restore this phone. thanks
