iPod touch "Can't synch iPod Touch"

Lately, when I plug in my iPT, I get a message "Couldn't synch Paul's iPod Touch.Device timed out" or something very similar. So far, if I unplug the Touch and then plug it back in the synch finishes. I'm worried that at some point it may no longer synch at all.
My Touch is a Gen2 and otherwise works just fine. I haven't made any recent software upgrades to iTunes.
Any ideas? thanks

try restarting your ipod and restarting your computer and trying a different cord in a different usb outlet.
