can't tether iPhone to MacBookPro (but can to iPad)?

Any ideas why I:

a) can tether my iPhone internet data to my iPad via HotSpot fine, but

b) when I try to do the same thing to my MacBook Pro (i.e. use the Hotspot to get some internet connectivity) it doesn't work and tells me MacBook Pro is not supported?

Any way to fix this? Obviously my iPhone data & tethering is working fine as the iPad proves...
