Can't update iphone os past 2.0

I'm having a problem updating my iphone's os.

iphone version: original iphone with edge
iphone os version: 2.0
itunes version : 8.2.1(6)

In iTunes there's a "check for updates" button and itunes tells me my os is up to date. I searched for a list of iphone versions and iphone os version compatibilities but didn't find anything.
