PKG files should, by default, open with installer.app not Stuffit expander. Looks like something has happened to the file associations.

Right click on the PKG and choose Installer. If it is not listed choose others and then browse /applications/utilities for the installer.

You can also highlight the file and select File / Get Info (Apple Key and I). Make sure that the pkg "Opens With" lists installer. If it does not change it and apply it to all files of that type.

As you downloaded the dmg file, as opposed to running Software Update, I can only assume that you do not have iLife 08 apps installed , especially iPhoto. Perform a software update and see whats listed. If nothing appears then you do not have a version if iPhoto that can be upgraded. This file will only update iPhoto version 7.*

are my applications somehow now in the wrong location? please see screenshots below:

by default they would be stored in /Macintosh HD/Applications. Most of yours are in /Macintosh HD/users/Markarnold/Applications/

How did that happen? Did you move/install them there.

Open Iphoto and see what version you have installed. Also run Software Update and see what is listed.

they may have been moved there by mistake

how can i move the applications to the proper place?

Open Iphoto and see what version you have installed. Also run Software Update and see what is listed.

software update says i dont need any updates...

i am running iphoto 7.0.2

Where is the iphoto application stored? Is it in

/Macintosh HD/users/Markarnold/Applications/

If it is move the iphoto application from /Macintosh HD/users/Markarnold/Applications/
to /Macintosh HD/applications ? Then try again.

ok guys, it looks like the problem has been solved since it is now downloading my updates. here is what fixed everything. first changing the installer package error.

then i moved the application folder from the user to macintosh HD folder. in order to do that i had to correct two error messages. first was i had to get rid of limewire for some reason then i had to disable itunes helper which i did by restarting and holding down the shift key. after that i was finally able to replace the application folder into the proper place.

then i reran application update and its now downloading IWeb, IPhoto, IDVD and Garageband updates!

thanks so much for you guys' help. you rock!

take care

No Problem. Glad you got it sorted.

Its really strange thats your applications were in your user folder. By default the iLife 08 installer will always put them into your Macintosh HD/applications. Did you move them at some point? Just curious. :)

Completely off-topic but I noticed your icons for music, pics, etc - -where'd you get that set, looks cool.

I can't change my Applications icon for some reason at all, not sure why, but changed others easy -

i think i did move them recently trying to see if it was just a duplicate application folder thus taking up double the space it needed to.

somewhere i got a set of icons for leopard, i can't remember where i got them but if i can locate them i will let you know.
