So I seem to have they typical hang up on the screen that says "Configuring Installation" however after reading numerous posts on this topic it seemed there was a solution.

Unfortunately nothing has worked. Here's what I have done so far.
Software Update - fail
Delete partial update from library/updates
Download 675MB combo update - fail
fresh leopard 10.5.1 on wiped startup disc, software update/combo - fail
hardware test - tested fine
permission repaired on all discs (repeat update steps) - fail

It seems after all these steps - every mac user had success, but not me. Why?

Specs.
2.8 ghz 8 core mac pro
8 gig ram
3.320 TB (320gb/1tb/1tb/1tb
10.5.1
nvidia 8800

any suggestions are greatly appreciated
thanks

First thing I'd do is check for a 10.5.6-related receipt in /Library/Receipts and get rid of it, if you find it. Run the combo update again (don't use Software Update).

Thanks for the response.

Heres what's in my reciepts folder. Would any of these need deleting?

No - none of those are the receipt file that would be there.

With that in mind, the cause is likely to either be a partial download or a cache file that is repeatedly becoming corrupted. To check if it's a cache issue, you can use a free maintenance utility such as OnyX to clear caches.

THANK YOU!

Onyx said my disc needed repair (dont know why since i wiped it clean with a fresh install - you'd think wiping it clean encompasses all repairs etc)

I repaired it from the installation DVD (and even then it said it was fine after repairing, as though disc utility THOUGHT it was fine?) Onyx then agreed that the disc was repaired.

Combo update - no problems!

I can't believe 2 hours on the phone with apple care did nothing and Onyx saves the day in 10 minutes.

I will toast to you tonight my friend! Thank you.

That's odd, 'cause OnyX and Disk Utility use the exact same mechanism to check your root volume...
