Cant upgrade Iphoto library

I have been using iphoto without a hitch for years. recently, it froze while i was in the middle of editing a pic. i had to force a quit. Afterwards, I was unable to start Iphoto. I upgraded hoping to solve the problem but it only made the problem fancier. When I click on the iphoto icon it tells me to upgrade my library. when i try to do that the software program does not respond. I have tried the various options you get when you depress the control and option button while logging in and none of them have solved the problem. Any suggestions?
