Can't view gifs sent to me via text message

My friend sent me a link to a gif and when I try to open it, it opens on safari and only shows a picture of the gif. The gif does not play. :(

We are communiting via imessage.
I have an iphone 5s and my friend has an iphone 6.
I tried playing the gif with and without an internet connection but still no luck.

Any suggestions?
