For anyone who cares, I purchased a 750GB USB 3.0 2.5" Toshiba Canvio external hard drive, tore it apart and to discover it's a 9.5mm 5400rmm drive that is precisely the same as the one that is used in the current 15" and 17" MBP (I know this because I compared it side by side with mine). Also to note, Best Buy had it for 79.99, and the cheapest drive I found on new egg was a WD Caviar Blue for 84.99.

Installed it in my girlfriend's MB 13" aluminum and runs great. Quite fast compared to the stock 160gb it came with, but slow vs. the 40gb x25-v I had in it (as far as read speeds and boot up).

Edit: The drive even had the Apple logo on the sticker.

hey bro... here is a rule of thumb.....your best place to get external hard drives is staples.....they have had 1tb's on sale a couple of times and i was able to get them for 55 dollars.... they are normally o nsale for 80... and then you get a 25 of 75 coupon from ejunkie or ebay....
