capture from dvr to mac mini

I have a motorola dct-6412 III dvr from what used to be cox cable ( now suddenlink). I was wondering if anyone out there has hooked this thing up to you mac via the firewire port on dvr, an capture off the recorded video an burned it to dvd. I know I can record video off of it to a vhs tape an then copy that to dvd but I want to try an do it the other way to have better quality video. At the moment I do not have the 4 pin to 6 pin firewire cable to try it out. Just wondering if anyone else has done this an it worked out ok.
