I have a Sony hdr-hc7 camera and have a lot of problems capturing the movie from tape into FCE. Today I found out that I shot the footage in DV instead of HDV, so set the codec in FCE to dv-PAL (Europe). It captured the video, but I had no audio? Does anyone know what codec I need to use then?
And then, when I shoot my material in HDV, will setting the codec to Apple 1080i50 be sufficient to capture it in FCE?
Capturing in iMovie worked fine. Should I capture in iMovie first then and then export to XML for FCE?
I also have a lot of old avi-files but FCE does not recognize avi. By googling I found out that I need to convert it to another file, but what is best? MP4? MOV? And what program can I use best?
Lost of questions, but I hope anyone from this forum can help me.

Seems to be an ongoing problem:

Have you also consulted the manual about the proper settings to capture audio? I don't have a camera to test right now, therefore I am unable to help you with this.

DV-PAL is a good codec for SD DV footage, Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) can be used to capture DV and HDV footage.

It should, but make sure to use the AIC instead of HDV codec.

You can capture in iMovie (DV and HDV using AIC) and then import the captured clips into FCE, no need for XMLs.

The QuickTime container (.mov) using the DV-PAL codec (for SD footage) or AIC (for HD footage) for video, and Uncompressed for audio/Sound will work.
Use MPEG Streamclip to do this. Either use CMD+E to transcode a single clip opened in MPEG Streamclip or use the BATCH LIST (CMD+B) to transcode multiple clips.

There is also MRoogle to search MR Forums for similar topics.

Thanks, i found the threads you mention in an earlier search. They did not bring me anything, therefore I posted on this forum. So I did some research before bothering anyone here :)
Seems like I just have to load into iMovie... a shame...
