Capture vs. HD Firewire Problem

So I am just trying out my new MBP and FCS today and am having a major problem. The MBP has only one FW800 port, so I am plugging my LaCie rugged in and then connecting my camcorder via FW400 to the LaCie. However when I have FCP open the camcorder will not appear but the HD stays booted. When I am in finder the HD disconnects but the camcorder is visible.
Does anyone know what is going on?

what you're doing is daisy chaining.
with capturing, that's bad.
you should be hooking up directly to you laptop FW port to your camcorder.
I am of the school that you should also leave your computer alone while capturing.
