I don’t remember Apple showing new Car Play features exclusive to new phones. Your phone either supports Car Play or it doesn’t. If a new feature comes with a new version of iOS and your phone doesn’t support updating to that iOS, I guess you would have a better experience with a newer phone. A newer phone also might update the screen faster which might give a better experience. But otherwise all phones on a given version of iOS should provide the same experience.

Given that CarPlay is not very demanding in its operations, older hardware is probably perfectly capable unless your car headunit display is extremely big or of very high resolution. Even then probably it is ok.

I recently switched to a 16 Pro from an XS. I didn't notice any difference with CarPlay.
