*and to add insult to injury, it also drops support for the 1st gen iPad.

This takes the cake. Is THIS a hardware limitation, too??? The 1st iPad can't handle making a text-on-background Card??? Good thing I had the iPhone version installed on the iPad already. At least it can keep on doing that much.

Most probably its Apple's planned obsolescence than a hardware limitation:rolleyes:

Apple DOES NOT kill its obsolete products for no reason. Don't you realize iOS 6 supports even iPhone 3GSs?

The new Cards app does not support iPad 1 because iPad 1 has a limited performance for graphic, that is inadequate to process Core Animations used in the new Cards app.

iPad 1 also has less usable memory than does iPhone 3GS, that is the reason it is dropped for iOS 6 update; they do have the same amount of RAM, but iPad 1 requires more system memory because its screen resolution is 5.12x higher than iPhone 3GS's.

iPhone 3GS doesn't support most of the features of iOS 6. The ones it does support can be implemented on the original iPad too. Take the example of Siri, iPhone 4, iPad 2 can surely run it and probably iPhone 3GS too. But they kept it exclusive for iPad 3, iPhone 4S and 5. The same can be said about FaceTime over 3G. Apple always does that, its just the way business works.

[…... Take the example of Siri, iPhone 4, iPad 2 can surely run...

Although I feel planned obsolescence could have been a factor, I equally feel that there are very likely other factors at play.

Although hackers managed to get Siri to effectively work on an iPhone 4, the ‘raise to speak’ feature doesn’t. That feature uses technical components that the iPhone 4S has, but the 4 doesn’t.

The A5 chip used in the iPhone 4S is a lot better at removing background noise that the A4 in the 4 (IIRC, Apple licensed technology from Audience for the A5).

One reason suggested that when the Siri beta was released was confined to the 4S was to do with the load on Apple server’s – too many people using it and performance suffers – and indeed, this was touted as a possible reason why so many people reported performance of Siri worsening over time. This might be a reason why Apple is restricting Siri. However, the raise to speak feature was one was something that a lot of people seemed to like and, in my opinion, made Siri more useful – but not having it, I can see a lot of people griping. Similarly, if the iPhone 4 struggled with background noise, there’s also an issue about functionality and customer satisfaction.

…. and probably iPhone 3GS too…

It does but there are issues – background noise being a main one (IIRC, Siri wouldn’t work at all if there was any).

….The same can be said about FaceTime over 3G….

With FaceTime and 3G, there’s the issue with networks – it wouldn’t be Apple’s call entirely.

It's a complete let down in the UK, they take 9 - 16 Business days to arrive. So roughly 2 - 4 weeks! I would happily pay a bit more for them to print them in the UK rather than the Czech Republic if they would arrive quicker!

Good point about the delivery time - it's rather puts me off!

why most probably? what engineering evidence do you have?

i know its crazy, but apple, the worlds biggest and wealthiest company, doesnt sit around trying to figure out ways to screw mac nerds. dunno about you but im an enterprise software dev...making software is hard. nothing is simple. the complexities & challenges are shielded from most users.

are you new to this topic? the chip-level mods to 4S and ipad3 have been noted and discussed ad nauseam. 3GS doesnt have the horsepower or the licensed audio tech to do voice recog well enough.
