My vehicle manufacturer has begun "unlocking" CarPlay for some of it's vehicles, and lucky me, mine was eligible to have it turned on. If it matters, it's a 2018 Jaguar F-Pace.
The premium, 10-inch multi-touch screen, or "tech-package" add on, is a smoldering dumpster fire of bugs, so I was happy as Hell as to have another option.
CarPlay is nice but I have noticed a few issues---animation is not as smooth as on a phone and, more importantly, multitouch seems to be limited to double-tap to zoom---panning is restricted to the arrow keys for N,S,W,E and the + and - for zoom.
The manufacturer was very proud to explain how this unit has a "quad core processor," so it seems to me animations should be super smooth with full multitouch (I'm more interested in panning around in Maps than anything else---there's obviously no web browser in CarPlay, although the Jaguar unit does have a garbage browser by itself).
I don't know anyone else with CarPlay---are other systems as limited, especially on the multitouch issue? Can't figure out of this an Apple or Jaguar issue. Apple is so fanatical about the user experience--I find it hard to believe they'd allow radically difference experiences among different vehicles.
