I'm new to Apple watch and I own a series 3.

I paid $4.99 for Carrot weather for my Iphone but it looks like I must pay extra to have the complication on my watch? Am I reading that right?

I am trying for a watchface like this. Is this possible on a series 3?

I've had it forever, so I'm going by their website.

I think complications will work without the premium tier, they just don't update as frequently.
it's only $5 a year though. (there are higher tiers that offer more, but the lowest will get your watch updated)

one thing I hadn't thought of till now, carrot uses dark sky to get it's data, that might become an issue soon, as apple has bought dark sky, and as of now, their API is slated to be turned off at the end of 2021. (the API is what other people can use to access the dark sky data) although apple could release a version of their own.

the face is called "Infograph modular" I believe it only is available on the Series 4 and 5

There is a HUGE amount of difference in screen sizes between the 3 and the 4/5, so that face probably wouldn't fit and still be readable
if you know someone with a 4/5 ask them to lock their watch, and pull up the pin screen to unlock, and compare that to yours
here's a pic that gives a pretty good comparison of the 2.

Yeah the subscription is because the developer has to pay a tiny fee every time the app pulls data from the vendor. If you use the app on your phone only, you probably open it maybe 1-3 times per day. So the cost isn’t very big. However, if you use the Apple Watch complication, now the data is updating every half hour. So that 1-3 data pulls suddenly balloons to 48 data pulls per day. The developer has to charge more for that in order to still make money on the app. I personally think it’s worth it since the app is way better than the stock weather app, the developer updates it regularly, and is very responsive to questions and feedback. In fact, there is a huge thread on this forum where the developer often posts about updates and answers questions.

Unfortunately, as @waw74 pointed out, that watch face is exclusive to the series 4/5 models. However, you can still customize the Carrot complication for the watch faces your watch does have. The app does have other available data sources besides Dark Sky. So, I wouldn’t worry about that source going away next year.

Thank you for the responses.

I have my first face setup here. I just wanted a better looking weather app for the middle.
