Where I am
Curious, has anyone here used Carvana?
If so, is it as simple as they make it out to be, purchase a car, and have it delivered?

What about future service for said car?

Thanks in advance

Never heard of it. New or used? Or both?

New cars are warranted by the manufacturer. You can take them to any dealership of same brand for warranty service.

Well, you could just look at their website...

Used. 7 day money back, and 100-day, 4,189 mile warranty, which doesn’t seem very generous. No idea where you go for service. I had to go digging in the FAQs to get the details.

All of there cars are “certified”. It maybe not to the level one expects from a “certified” program. It’s the above mentioned 100 day 4,189 mile warranty...

Interesting topic that you bring up.

Quick story:

So, last year before I Purchased my Pitch black 18’ Scat Pack, I stopped at a Dodge dealership about an hour and a half from my house to look at one specific model that I was interested in. And I was talking to the finance manager whom I know, Somehow we ventured on the topic about Carvana and I ended up making a snarky comment that I thought it was a ‘gimmick’, and he was mentioning that Carvana is a actually the future for vehicle buying with how they ‘pick up your vehicle’ and delivery of the vehicle with the whole ‘vending machine’ process.

Now, even a year later, I’ve heard of multiple people using Carvana and having great experiences with it. I think the advantage is, not so much necessarily choosing the car you want, but you cut out the ‘dealership/middleman fees’ and they deliver the vehicle straight to your house.

I can’t say that it’s something I’m interested in personally, but I can see why it will continue to grow, and I frequently see their marketing all the time now.

I would just love to put a token in that big car dispenser and see my car come down from top!!
I may just buy one to witness that!!! :D

I've heard of both Carvana and Vroom, another online dealer of late model used cars. I don't know anyone who's purchased from either, but I have shopped their websites out of curiosity and they do seem to have a price advantage over my local dealerships. I'm not sure if I'd buy a car sight unseen, but many have, and left good reviews...

My credit union works with two car buying services. I’d imagine most/many credit unions (as well as many banks) have similar arrangements. They will give you up to 0.5% off of your loan if you go with one of their car buying service partners. (Current rates are as low as 1.4% for new OR used (2014 or newer for best rate) after applying the discount.

New Cars Inc - despite the name - will deliver new or used cars to your door - and they’ve been doing it for more than 30 years. So, yawn.

TrueCar is a newer option. looks like they also do new and used, dunno if they deliver to your door.

(But I really do not understand why delivery to your door is such a big deal. I mean, I’m sure any dealer will pick up the cost of an Uber!)

I’ve never tried either service, so caveat emptor. I take a blank check issued by my CU “up to” my pre-approved loan max. At the appropriate late moment in finance, I slap the check down and ask if they can do better.

They can do better. But only if you have that check. The preapproved loan check. Not the “I’m paying cash” check.

Can you guess why?

FWIW I do not understand why the vast majority of consumers deal with banks, rather than credit unions.

Thanks for the feedback.

Like someone else pointed out, I know I can get details from the website. I was more curious on the process, and people's experience with Carvana and other online car purchase programs.

I own a Mustang GT, and certainly not about to replace it. But, by the time I am, I do wonder if ordering online will be the way to go, i.e. the wave of the future.

Bringing this older thread back to life. Has anyone here sold a car to Carvana? The market for used cars is pretty crazy right now and their offer is tempting. I just don't want to deal with any hassle when they come pick up the car and then the offer is suddenly lowered.

I’ve said it before in the ‘car thread’, I chastised Carvana years ago, calling them a ‘gimmick’. Well, I was wrong. They are legit and it’s as easy as they make it sound, with their offer, trade-in/pick up, even delivery is a seamless as it seems when they literally drop the car off to you. My neighbor used them and had an excellent transaction. I’ve said it before, I do think they (And others) are the future of putting dealerships out of business.

The used car market will be on fire for a long time, because of the chip shortage. I’ve talked to a few people in the industry, and they suspect it could be 2023 before the value will start to diminish again on vehicles.

Good to know. Thank you! I’m tempted to sell it myself but I really don’t feel like dealing with that. I must say some of the trade-in offers I’m hearing from dealers are laughable. But they admit they can’t touch Carvana. Buying at a dealer feels so archaic at this point.

I have been tempted by a couple of cars listed on Carvana over the last few months but never pulled the trigger. I have been looking again because the trade in on my current car is stupid high so I am also interested in hearing if anyone has trade in experiences to share.

Personally, I prefer selling my cars outright, (unless of course I’m trading in for a specific car I want from the dealership itself). I mean, it couldn’t be any easier to sell your car yourself with a proper description, title in hand and a Carfax report readily available. You pocket the net, and there’s no expenses with commissions and circular fees.

The problem selling your vehicle personally, it’s not always instantaneous, it really depends how fast you want to sell it, whereas; with Carvana, you obviously could have that sold in an expedited manner.

However I do agree with you, and it leads me to another random thought that I won’t get to in depth here, but dealerships are on their way out, and it’s going to be to a point where it will likely be ‘service only’ in the future, because their trade-in values are typically a joke, poorly trained salesman and too many ‘Gotcha’ scams with trying to draw the customer in.

Yep. Not to derail this thread too much, but it does speak to Carvana’s success…
I had one Honda dealer tell me that they are only selling at full sticker so they know I’ll be disappointed to not be able to negotiate. Uhhh no sir, I’d much rather see a price and know what it is instead of you walking back and forth to your manager writing numbers on a paper with a marker. Another dealer absolutely refuses to talk about anything specific unless I’m in the showroom. They seem to have missed 2020. I asked if there was any flexibility on price and they replied yes but only if I come in. And their philosophy on trade-ins is just weird. They don’t even want to try to compete with Carvana. It’s like they’d rather not try to make anything at all if they can’t continue ripping people off.

I posted this in the ‘car thread’ today. It hooks on what you were saying where changes are already taking place in my community:
