Case lanyards....?

I just bought the Element Case's Flight 5 case and it has come with a lanyard (its quite a short one to be honest and doubt it would fit to go around the neck!).

I've never had a lanyard on a case before and just wondered what everyone's views were on lanyards - how exactly are you meant to use them?! Are they supposed to hang around your neck or can they someone be attached around the wrist?!

I always viewed it as something to put around the wrist (like the small lanyards that come with digital cameras (or at least used to, I haven't purchased a camera in years). Basically an extra fail safe in case you dropped your phone while handling it.
