Noted leaker Evan Blass this evening tweeted a mysterious render of an iPad that features slimmer bezels, no Home button, and no notch with space for a camera.

Blass did not provide any information on the render, aside from the cryptic message "Seems to be something missing from this (encased) iPad..." which perhaps hints that he received the render from a case maker. Blass typically only shares leaks that he believes are from credible sources.

Case manufacturers often create renders and dummy models of devices ahead of their debut in order to be the first to come out with new accessories and cases for freshly launched devices. Much of the time, these kinds of leaks are accurate because there's a lot of money at stake, but there can be serious misses.

In this case, with no accompanying information, there's no way to determine whether or not this design is indicative of what a future iPad might look like. There is no notch or cutout for the camera, and the device is depicted running an older version of iOS, but for a simple rendering to show off a case, these features wouldn't matter. The lack of a front-facing camera and no visible notch in this particular render, if accurate, are not indicative of Apple's plans.

Rumors have indeed suggested Apple is working on an iPad Pro that's similar in design to what's pictured in the rendering. Apple is said to be planning to launch an iPad Pro with thinner bezels, a faster processor, a custom Apple-built GPU, and most importantly, Face ID.

With Face ID, the next-generation iPad Pro will not need a Home button, providing more room for the display. Future iPad Pro models are expected to come in physical sizes similar to the existing 10.5 and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models, and based on icon spacing, the rendering appears to depict the larger iPad Pro.

Exact display sizing for future iPad Pro models is unknown as of yet, but a recent rumor from Taiwan's Economic Daily News has suggested the smaller of the two tablets could feature an 11-inch display. Apple would not need to increase the actual size of the iPad Pro to introduce a larger display if the bezels are smaller.

Apple is believed to be planning to introduce new iPad Pro models sometime in the second half of the year. Bloomberg has suggested the devices will debut sometime after June, perhaps in September, while other sources have predicted a June WWDC launch.

Update: It appears the "rendering" is a fake photoshopped image, as it spotted in an auction listing for a 10.5-inch iPad Pro case along with the original image that was photoshopped. Evan Blass has deleted his original tweet.

Good find. I need to have a talk with someone. https://t.co/c41dHZdjEn - Evan Blass (@evleaks) March 23, 2018

it should be full screen, the notch is tiny in ipad big screen. if it is ignorable in iphone x screen how much more in ipad

The next iPad Pros are not expected to continue to use LCD screens so why would they not have rounded corners like the current iPad Pros as they would likely keep the same displays? All that has been rumored is thinner bezels.
Because this is Apple. If they were to ever do the bezels like that you can absolutely bank on the corners not being square. It looks terrible.

Edit: I think you were actually agreeing with us?

Well then they would either have to use chamfered corners like LG does on the G6 or they would just have to overlay a curved mask over them to hide the square corners. And either one might require changes to the UI element guide to ensure apps that currently use that area would no longer do so.

It would be exactly like the iPhone X, just larger. They don’t have to change anything on the corners of the device.

He confirmed its fake. Surprised he would have tweeted it out in the first place since it was so obviously fake.

I've moved this to our iOS blog and marked it as fake. Evan Blass has confirmed that he was tricked with a photoshopped image and has deleted his original tweet. My apologies for the confusion. Hopefully the real thing will look a lot better than this :)

I was surprised too, he usually vets stuff better so I figured it must have been from a reliable source even though it looks sketchy. We'll more carefully evaluate future leaks from him.

If Blass deleted it then why is it still listed here even after updating that it’s fake. Kinda pointless unless it’s fun to talk about what ifs

You mean like “What if Evan Blass wasn’t an idiot?”

I mean, really, what an obviously photoshopped image. Dense. Hopefully no one actually follows him.

Jeez, no need to spit the dummy. Anyone can be caught out in a distracted moment. It's not like it invalidates all the many, many times he has shared valid info. This is why over 400,000 people do follow him.

Too much overeagerness to know something others don’t. Anyone can tell it’s a fake. He should’ve taken a little more time and checked it out. A mistake is sending something you didn’t intend to. In this case, he intended to send it. He just didn’t do his homework before doing so.

Hoping the Face ID can unlock at a good angle. I don’t use my iPad Pro face on! Would be very annoying to need to standup and look down on it every time I need to unlock it.

Small correction: It's not an auction listing, it's a regular German web shop. And that photoshop image seems to crop up in different places. Maybe their German distributor is at fault?

I’m just curious how Face ID if implemented into the iPad, How would it work both in landscape and portrait mode based on how your holding it. Unless Apple only allows the iPad to unlock in a certain orientation.

I think we‘re past the point where anyone will believe anything on the basis of a casemaker‘s product.

I am so excited for the best iPad in the iPad history to this date is coming soon.

This just got me wondering. On the iPhone X FaceID can only unlock your phone in portrait position. Can a software update allow FaceID to work in landscape mode as well? Or would a hardware update (buy a new phone, ugh) be necessary?
