So I'm in the market for a protective case for my 4th gen iPad. I already have a back skin and a thicker (Moshi) screen protector installed. However, I do worry about situations (beach, festivals, cabin trips) where I could drop it and, most of all, where I could get some depris like sand inside it.
Obviously the Otterbox Defender is the most popular choice, but it doesn't seem to be my cup of tea. Then there's the Griffin Survivor but it just seems too bulky. I've come across two alternatives that might be for me:
Firstly there is the Case-Mate Tough Xtreme. This seems to be the nicest-looking rugged case on the market and it has a slim profile. Some have said that they were surprised how good this was considering Case-Mate isn't known for its rugged cases. I'm actually using a Case-Mate rugged case on my Samsung mobile and it's terrific. My main concern is that with places like the speaker left uncovered, sand could get in there. On the other hand, even the Otterbox leaves the speaker uncovered.
It seems that Gumdrop Drop Tech might be an unsung hero of sorts as many consider it better than Otterbox or Griffin, yet it isn't spoken about half as much. It's not exactly a looker (I'd probably take the military green version) but it does seem to have good protection without all the bulk of, say, Griffin. Even the speaker is covered with a silicone cut-out.
Which one would you get? Does it matter how well the iPad is covered? I mean if Otterbox leaves iPad's speaker uncovered, does that mean that people shouldn't even worry about getting sand or whatever the speaker holes. Right now, I'm probably leaning a bit towards the Drop Tech. The Tough Xtreme is cooler-looking (I'd probably get the green/orange version) with a slimmer profile, but the Drop Tech does have a better track record.
