I’ve newer worried about having a case that covered over the back cameras but keep reading that it’s extra fragile this year. Is it really necessary this year?

For scratch prevention sure. However I’m a little reluctant to cover that area due to reading that a large portion of the heat dissipation is from the “plateau”.

The camera lenses are made from sapphire, so unless you’re putting sand with your phone in your pocket I don’t think it’s necessary.

Your case should have a slight lip the protects the screen when laid face down on a flat surface. Should also protect the cameras if you lay it on a flat surface, screen up.
