I dont know! personally if I was to get one ( which I will not be BTW, one less person in line for you! ) I would just put it in a old case ( ya know that kind that would protect the BACK of the ipad where the camera is housed) until they come out with a decent one that can keep the back scratch free.
Even if you cant get a "official" case that is going to protect the ipad 2 on launch day at the apple store I am sure there will be a ton of good ones coming to market VERY fast!

I would not buy any of the cases (other than the cover from Apple if you want that) on day 1 because they are usually based off of a "blind" design spec sent out by Apple to the manufacturers. This design spec has no picture of what the final iPad 2 design would be, simply the dimensions and where the holes should be. They are gonna be pretty ugly and not really work well with the new design.
Expect some pretty nice cases from manufacturers after they have gotten some hands on time with the device, especially ones that make use of the magnets inside the iPad and the auto sleep/wake feature.

Actually, I will be a first-time iPad owner and wanted to equip myself before launch, so I bought the following:
Simple Case Logic netbook bag ($15)
Amazon Basics netbook sleeve ($9)
Arkon stand ($13)
Pretty good protection overall for less than the price of a Smart Cover and it will all fit because they're generic and meant for all 10" tablets.

That Apple cover doesn't seem like a great idea to me. I like having at least a touch of cushion protection on the edges and back of my expensive electronics. So when I get an iPad 2 (which I will wait a bit to hear about the hardware and to decide if I want Verizon or AT&T version) I will look for a case that offers more protection.
I think I am going to buy the Smart cover from Apple and then get the back of the iPad 2 "skinned" in that clear-plastic scratch-proof stuff once it is available for iPad 2. Anyone else considering this route, or have any feedback?
The two things I liked most about the original iPad case were protection of the aluminum back and the ability to flip the cover over in an inverted 'V' shape to stand the device up in portrait mode. I found it to be much more stable than the intended design of folding it underneath in a narrow triangle.
With the new smart covers, not only is the back completely unprotected, but its rolled-up triangle base seems perilously unstable, especially on more uneven surfaces. Very pretty, but not functional for my personal uses in the least. I'll be attempting to modify my original case to work with iPad 2, and wait to see what rolls out from third-party vendors. This offering from Hard Candy looks promising.

That hard candy case looks pretty good. What kind of material is that made out of?? do u think its as thin as the orginal ipad case?
I was planning on going the same route actually. I figure it will keep the iPad light, and thin (something I missed with the old apple iPad case). All I really care about is the scratching of the back and this will eliminate that issue without adding weight or thickness. Plus I like the apple covers in that I can tear it off and put back on so easily when desired. That was something that was a pain with the old apple case.
^This. I'll rock it like this at home and if I head out with it, I'll just get a sleeve that can fit the ipad with the smart cover attached.
I plan on buying the smart cover + protective film for mine. Will keep the iPad nice and light, slim, and scratch free.
