Do the apple stores in the UK take cash, i heard they don't?

Bring both just to be sure.

Sucks to be waiting in a line for so long, only to have your credit card declined or being told that you have insufficient funds. Pretty embarrassing too if I may add..

Last time I checked it is Credit Card only mainly due to item limits.

Deposit it into a checking account?
Buy a VISA/American Express Prepaid card and load the cash on to it at a Walmart (or ASDA in your case)
Buy an Apple Gift Card?

Last time I went to the Apple store with cash, I had to purchase a gift card and use the gift card to purchase my MacBook Air.
