Searching, I found similar but not identical problems, but no fixes. Hoping for some magic here, I am not adept at computers. I have a MacBook Pro mid 2012, non-retina, new battery and SSD installed a few months ago (thanks to this forum), works great. Got tired of two problems with current Catalina/Mail: first, the maddening added steps to select, then reselect the reading list or bookmarks; and second, no longer able to open a mail message and split screen it for a side-by-side reply as was once able to do. When the message is fully opened, clicking reply makes it disappear (not deleted, but replaced with my draft reply in the exact same space). The inbox list is still there, but of course at the 5 line maximum. So I reinstalled Catalina from the web, ignored the updates, leaving version 13.1.3. That fixed the reading list / bookmark problem, but no joy with mail behavior (version 13.4). Yes, I have worked preferences until I'm crosseyed. This appears to be a bug, not user related? Looking for ideas, thank you folks.
