I was running macOS 10.15.4 on a 2017 3.5 GHz i5 iMac. I tried to download the update to 10.15.6. After a couple of progress bars, the screen went dark and didn't come back. I waited a few minutes, then tried cycling power, and then tried cycling power with the Option key held down. Nothing worked; the machine wouldn't boot and the screen stayed dark. I took the machine to a Mac technician and he confirmed: the machine was bricked.
Even though the machine was still under extended warranty, I didn't want to be without a computer for several weeks while waiting for a repair. I went to the nearest Apple Store and bought a new 2020 3.8 GHz i7. Fortunately, I had backed up the internal SSD on the older machine with SuperDuper before trying the update, and I was able to transfer all my apps and associated files to the new machine and get back to where I had been before the crash. I can get the older machine fixed under warranty and then sell it.
I found that the new machine is running 10.15.6, and there is a notice to install a 10.15.6 Supplemental Update.
I'm gunshy about running another Catalina 10.15.6 updater. Has anyone else seen this happen? Thanks.

Even though the dead machine is relatively new, you might have just run into some bad luck re: something died hardware-wise. Could be something as minor as a resistor, capacitor, etc failed on the logic board vs a major component (SSD, memory).

If this was an issue with the updater, would be hearing about it here, very loudly.

So, run the update.
