Running the PBs of Catalina on a Mac mini (Late 2012) with a home-brew 1.25TB Fusion drive following OWPC instructions from back in the day and running APFS (when they pulled that from the beta and made it a blind alley, restoring all *that* was fun!). This is used primarily as a media server and player connected to a TV, and informal back-up device. It's on 24/7 but there is no evidence the drive is failing—straight diagnostics, but speed, noise, etc. all also seem fine. It's seven years old now but was maxed-out at the time—2.4GHz Core i7, 16GB RAM, and TBH is a workhorse and ad for what these things can do.
But the last three updates, including the one to get the "release" 15.5, have failed, with this message displayed:
"macOS could not be installed on your computer
The data template could not be migrated due to an error.
Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again."
And, that does work: it does restart, reinstall, and then operate with seemingly no problems: networking (specifically, permissions) seemed a little off in the last PB but in the release version I'm not even seeing that.
I have Googled this a lot and have not seen any reference to "data template could not be migrated": what is this?
And yes, I guess I should nuke and pave, but having done that to this very machine on the AFPS issue and had a large chunk of my music wiped out from the iCloud sync issues last summer on the iOS PB while still dealing with the Jim Dalrymple Apple-Music-isn't-iTunes-Match fiasco (sv: my own music got DRMed and working out what had been, and what had not was very time consuming indeed), I like to tinker, but I am hoping this is not another lost weekend-type project as there have been a few in the past 18 months or so…!
