I need to transfer data from my Powermac G4 but when I select Target Disk mode and reboot it goes into Open Firmware. I checked the ROM version under the profiler and it is something like 3.4.xx I downloaded the 4.2.8 firmware update but can't install because it wants to boot into classic. Problem is I don't have OS9.1 which is the requirements for the ROM updater. Is there any other way to transfer data between macs or should I just get an ethernet cable and turn networking on?

I'd just use an ethernet cable in that situation--probably easier than getting an OS9 install from somewhere to update the firmware (though that will of course give you a properly updated Mac as part of the bargain).

Had that issue myself once or twice.
